Signs & Prevention

Notice Patterns. Avoid Assumptions. Know Where to Turn

There is no single profile of a person who harms children, and a warning sign is not proof. Prevention means taking concerns seriously, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and seeking guidance from qualified authorities when something seems wrong.

Protective Practices

What Safer Communities Have in Common

Child safety is strengthened by transparent policies and by adults who take responsibility for healthy boundaries.

Clear Boundaries

Adults should avoid secrecy, private isolated contact, favoritism, and communications that are not appropriate for a child’s age or setting.

Accountable Environments

Programs serving children need written safeguarding policies, screening, training, visible spaces, and multiple clear reporting pathways.

Respectful Listening

When a child or adult expresses discomfort, take it seriously. Do not demand certainty before seeking appropriate guidance.

If a Child Tells You Something

Stay Calm and Make Room for Their Voice

Thank them for sharing. Use simple, non-leading language. Do not pressure them for more detail or confront an alleged abuser. Follow your mandatory-reporting duties and contact the appropriate professional or authority.

Digital Safety Matters Too

Teach children that they can ask for help with uncomfortable online contact, images, requests, or conversations. Adults should maintain age-appropriate supervision and use clear family or organizational technology practices.
